Mantung

I made a quick visit to Mantung in the Murray Mallee from Cambrai via Walker Flat, then looked for the old railway from Galga. I was looking for the ruins of the old railway line that had been pulled up around 1990.

water tower, Mantung

The Galga-Mantung line was part of the railway line from Karoonda to Waikere on the River Murray which opened in 1914 to facilitate greater development of the rural areas of South Australia. In its boom in the 1930s, the community of Mantung had a bakery, boarding houses and shops, with a train coming through every day. It is another town in the Murray Mallee which has suffered from the closure of the railway line.
