As a counter to the concerns in this post Adam Dutkiewicz has reviewed the collaborative Mallee Routes 2019-2020 exhibition at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery in South Australia. This was the final collaborative exhibition in this long term project. Adam’s review is below. On Sunday, January 12th, 2020, with the closure of the Mallee Routes exhibition at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery, the collaborative part of Photographing the Mallee finally comes to an end after 3 years. The 2019/2020 Mallee Routes exhibition is the swan song of the collaborative project; a project which in the end, became non-collaborative. This picture is of Adam Dutkiewicz in the Jean Sims section of the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery… Read More
The third and last collaborative Mallee Routes exhibition is now showing at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery throughout December and early January. What is so noticeably missing in action is the local review of this body of work. With no catalogue essay the exhibition becomes situated in a critical art vacuum, and it gives rise to a sense of cultural loneliness and isolation–the distance between art’s production and its reception. Consequently, the… Read More
This limited edition photobook, which was printed by Momento Pro in Sydney, arrived via TNT courier at the studio in Encounter Bay late Tuesday afternoon. This is one form of self-publishing in the age of post-digital publishing. There is a long history to photography coming into books. The book has been designed to supplement my prints in the forthcoming 2019 Mallee Routes exhibition at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery. It has a… Read More

The exhibition at Murray Bridge Regional Gallery in South Australia has been shifted to 2019/2020 and it has been given larger space–the main gallery. The exhibition is a summing up exhibition of the 1st 3 years of the collaborative Mallee Routes project between Eric Algra, Gilbert Roe and myself.
I am currently working on making another Mallee Routes photobook. It includes 35mm black and white images of the South Australia Mallee that I made in the 1980s, and it will have a small introduction. At this stage I have the selected and edited a bunch of small prints that are currently spread out on the table in the office.
Exhibiting Mallee Routes at the wonderful Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery in Victoria opened on Friday the 23rd March, was a great experience. The exhibition was the result of a years work photographing the South Australian and Victorian Mallee by Eric, Gilbert and myself Mallee after our initial exhibition at Atkins Photo Lab in Adelaide in late 2017. It was a successful opening with Mark Thomson giving an excellent opening speech based around… Read More

From what I can judge, it looks as if the Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2017 (BIFB17) is starting to come together. It has a online public space as the new website has gone live. However, there is nothing yet about the photographers who comprise the core programme, what the 2017 Biennale is trying to achieve in relation to contemporary Australian photography, or what the issues the symposiums and talks will address. My… Read More
