Gilbert’s Gallery

Travelling along the Mallee Routes I see ‘The Mallee’ as it is now, and the traces of the way it was. The past is entwined with the present. Different cultures leave behind different traces. Modern human endeavour has a dramatic effect on the environment leaving behind altered landscapes criss-crossed with new and old structures. And there is destruction and the detritus of neglect. No areas within the Mallee have not been untouched; it is no longer pristine.

Some impressions of Ouyen, Victoria

According to the 2006 census Ouyen has a population of 1,061. Ouyen railway station, on the Mildura line, was built in 1906 and the town was established around it. This railway runs from Mildura to Ballarat. The town is the intersection of the Calder and Mallee Highways. A lot of trucks, and other road traffic, pass through the town throughout the day and most of the night. The trains transport the grains stored in the station’s silos for movement to other locations.

When we stayed there in May 2016 it seemed that the town is decaying/dying. Many buildings are closed and dilapidated. Despite a new grocer shop, IGA, and a few other buildings there are just a few newish buildings. And this is reflected in the visible population. It seemed to me that the older generations far outnumbered the young ones. When we were staying there in May 2016 I only saw a few young people.
